WYC Wanderlust Series: Sailing Out of this World

Date: April 18, 2024

Time: 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

Location: 1100 Eastman Lane Wayzata, MN 55391

Presented by Kim Knish

Kim started sailing in 2004 as a cruiser on Caribbean charters and progressed with her husband, Hermann, to obtain certifications for sailing monohulls and catamarans. They became members of the Wayzata Yacht Club and Capri 25 fleet in 2012 as owners of the boat Maverick (formerly Dakota). They have competed on Maverick at WYC and in the annual Leech Lake Regatta. Kim and Herman have completed several Caribbean and Apostle Island charters solo and with family and friends. They have participated as crew in blue water races including Charleston Race Week, First Coast Offshore Challenge and the St. Petersburg to Havana race sponsored by the St. Petersburg Yacht Club. Most recently, they joined the Shores of Leech Lake Yacht Club with their Catalina 34.

When she is not sailing, Kim pursues a variety of scientific endeavors including the development of new medical technologies and, most recently, long-duration space flight research with NASA. Interestingly, there are many parallels between long-duration space flight and sailing. Kim will provide an overview of NASA’s research analog program, use of analog astronauts (“astronaut” is Greek for “star sailor”), and her recent experience conducting research in an environment simulating a spacecraft traveling to Mars.
