Did you know that Wayzata has one of the top community orchestras in the Twin Cities? Attending a performance is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy live orchestral music with the whole family.
Now in its 15th season, the Wayzata Symphony Orchestra is excited and honored to welcome its new Music Director, Hannah Schendel! Schendel has established herself as a brilliant and collaborative young conductor. Along with Music Director of the WSO, she was named Visiting Director of Orchestra at Carleton College. Schendel recently completed her doctoral coursework in orchestral conducting at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, holds a Master’s degree in Orchestral Conducting from the University of South Carolina, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from the University of Minnesota.
Here’s what to look forward to this season!
Through weathering the pandemic and embarking on a yearlong search for its next conductor, the members of the WSO have been dedicated both to the organization and to creating music at a high level. The WSO is honored to be a part of the Wayzata Area Chamber of Commerce, promoting local musicians and their value in the community.
Highlights this season include three symphonies, pieces by female composers on every concert, a variety of pieces composed by diverse living composers, and the much-anticipated return of Anthony Ross, Principal Cello of the Minnesota Orchestra. There will be something for everyone to enjoy!
The first concert will be held on October 8, 2023 and is centered around the theme of celebration; celebrating both a new chapter in the WSO legacy and the joy that we all feel in coming together to make something beautiful.
The second concert on November 12, 2023 features 19th century French music, including Edouard Lalo’s emotional Cello Concerto in D Minor performed by Anthony Ross, bookended by two ballet suites.
Our third concert on March 3, 2024 is thought provoking, and will challenge us to consider the sometimes subtle nuances between fate and destiny. Just as painters carefully choose their color palette, so too will we explore dark and light shades of sound in our fourth and final concert of the season on May 5, 2024.
Each of these concerts has something unique to offer. The WSO is a hidden gem, presenting high-quality and meaningful concerts. All performances are held at Wayzata Central Middle School at 3:00 pm and are FREE of charge. No ticket is required. Donations are gratefully accepted.
